The afternoon was marred by Millie refusing to go to the nursery to admire the baby. When she gently remonstrated with her, the girl stormed off.

‘Don’t worry, Jessica, I’m not offended. Infants are not to everybody’s taste. I own that Edward and I are besotted with this little one but understand that others don’t feel the same way.’

‘I can only apologise for her, I thought she was making more effort to be civil. We’ve been getting on so well I’d almost forgotten how contrary she can be.’

‘You can’t expect her to change overnight. By the end of the summer she’ll be a different young lady and one we can all admire and love.’

After spending a pleasant hour in the nursery Jessica glanced out of the window and saw Millie wandering across the lawn. ‘Forgive me, Eleanor, but I must go in search of my friend. She’s been on her own long enough. I think it might be better if we dined in our apartment tonight.’

She gathered up her skirts and raced after them calling her friend’s name as she did so. As she reached the trees that edged the grass she heard the dogs begin to bark. She increased her pace fearful that Millie had met with some sort of accident.

Despite calling the dogs they ignored her and soon she could no longer hear them. An icy chill shook her. Something untoward had occurred and she had a dreadful feeling those trying to abduct her had taken Millie in error.

They needed Leo and his men at once. She hurtled to the stables and at her insistence the gig was got ready. She cracked the whip and the powerful gelding surged forward into the traces and set off at a gallop down the drive.

Leo had spent the morning talking to Edward about his predicament. ‘So you see, I now realise that I love Jessica more than I want to return to my previous life as a cavalry officer. However, as I’ve already set things in motion, I can no longer remain a civilian without being arrested for desertion.’

‘I’m sure that Adam would intervene if you asked him to. The pertinent question is, my friend, do you know if she reciprocates your feelings?’

‘I’m almost certain that she does.’

‘Then, marry her and take her with you. I’ve heard that many of the officers have
